Frank Schaefer

Frank Schaefer of the White Horse Inn, Provincetown, Cape Cod.
Frank died on Sept 14th 2007 in Boston while I was visiting Provincetown. I had just thought about him that morning and wondered if I would see him while I was in town.
That evening at dinner with a friend I heard the news.
It came as a shock to me, over the years he had been a strong presence in the support group I frequented and his face was a welcome sight to me. Somehow I just expected to see him there again.
Friends visiting P-town would stay at the White Horse Inn and absolutely LOVE it!
This photograph sums Frank up perfectly.

Edward Hopper, he who can get me all hopped up!

A Joel Meyerowitz photograph from Hoppers studio in Truro, Cape Cod.

Since I saw my very first painting by Edward Hopper I have always loved his work. Unconditionally.
His vision is one that you can live within.
Inhabit his world.
Feel the atmosphere.

New old discoveries

Edwin Dickinson a painter whose work I just saw at PAAM in Provincetown in a huge retrospective. I relished his light and brushwork.

Mary Hackett a self-taught Provincetown painter with her very own original style.

Susan Baker in her very own Memorial Museum in Pond Village, Truro, Cape Cod.

Harvest Moon

With the Autumnal Equinox also comes the Harvest Full Moon. Let us celebrate both as we transition into a new season. A time of more reflection and going inside and replenishing our inner resources.
Pay attention to what you love and appreciate it, hold it warm and cosy.

Happy to be back!

Back home again and it is autumn here. Well the autumnal equinox did just pass. On that day I was swimming in the Cape Cod bay celebrating away.
I LOVE TO SWIM.
Just being in water and feeling no gravity surrounded on all sides by sky and water may it be sea or lake or river gives me such deep pleasure.
That is when I feel most at home and at peace. In a body of water.
It is good to be home however after such a lovely trip to New England.
Much needed R and R.

Soul Food

I was talking to my father on the phone this morning and he mentioned having received a copy of Soul Food,a book of poems to nourish you, an anthology I edited with Neil Astley of Bloodaxe Books. His friend Frank in Taunton had sent him a copy because he had seen the surname on the book cover that we have in common.
My father said the book moved him so much from the cover and into the pages.
It brought tears to my eyes as I had not expected that. That is why I had not sent him a copy. I felt a little ashamed that I knew him so little and yet is that not the way it goes sometimes? Family are the ones you know the least.
Perhaps my expectations were just low and I did not want to be disappointed. A form of self-protection.
In any case the phonecall ended with tender words of missing eachother. I feel so moved and grateful. Thank you Soul Food and thank you Frank.
