Virginia Woolf painted by Vanessa Bell, her sister.
Today in 1941 Virginia Woolf left Monk's House near Lewes in East Sussex to drown herself in the nearby river Ouse. She filled her pockets with stones and walked in to the river. The note which she left for Leonard spoke of her deep despair and not being able to go through another bout of illness and also of putting him through it. She suffered from what is thought to be bi-polar.
